Review of wheels for a longboard. How to choose wheels ?

Greetings to all readers! Today I will run through the main characteristics and differences of longboard wheels from each other. Choosing the right wheels will allow you to achieve the ride performance you need from the board. For example, some wheels are needed for easy entry into a slide, while others are better suited for downhill.

Regardless of the brand, all wheels are made of polyurethane, nothing more suitable than this material has not yet been invented. Of course, each manufacturer uses different additives in the composition of the wheels, but this is of little interest to us. Because driving performance is influenced by 3 main characteristics:

  • Diameter
  • Rigidity
  • The form

Wheel diameter

Longboard wheels range from 62 to 100+ millimeters in diameter.

Small (62-70mm) wheels are slower than large ones and are therefore well suited for learning to ride or technical slalom. They are sensitive enough to unevenness of the road, the quality of asphalt and unnecessary objects in the way - a small pebble can easily lead to a fall.

Large (86-100 + mm) wheels are faster than small ones, but require more effort when accelerating. Excellent speed retention. They are unpretentious to the quality of the road: they will “swallow” cracks in the asphalt and small stones. Great for those who like to drive.

Medium (70-85mm) are station wagons, suitable for most riders. It's easy enough to disperse and "eat up".

Wheel stiffness

You can accurately determine the stiffness by the markings on the wheel. The stiffness parameter ranges from 73A to 97A.

  • Soft wheels: 73A, 75A, 77A, 78A, 79A
  • Medium wheels: 80A, 81A, 83A, 84A
  • Hard wheels: 87A, 89A, 90A, 97A

Most often, wheels are used with a stiffness in the range from 77A - 83A. This is the "golden mean" of rigidity.

The main thing that affects the stiffness is the grip. Soft wheels "stick" and hold the road perfectly, while hard ones, in turn, easily slide into the slide.

Accordingly, for a slide - hard, for a downhill - softer.

Wheel shape

There are two main forms:

  • With rounded edges.
  • Rectangular shape.

Only the degree of roundness differs.

Rectangular wheels have a larger contact area - accordingly, they hold the road better.

The rounded wheels make less contact with the road - it is easier to break into a slide.

Hopefully this information will help you choose the wheels to get the best handling and responsiveness from the board. Best buying site longboardpro.com
